THIS IS AN AIRBRUSH

It is a PAASCHE MODEL VL 3 AIRBRUSH to be exact. It was the airbrush that the artist used to create the body of work presented here as The Tropical Dream Series. In all actuality these paintings were the result of the artist learning how to use the airbrush. By teaching himself through trial and error one canvas at a time. Several months of practicing went into these various size canvas boards. The largest being 18 X 24 inches and there were none smaller than 10 X 12. At first the artist tried to use acrylic paint but there was too much difficulty in thinning the paint sufficiently to use with the airbrush. So he experimented trying different kinds of paint until he stumbled upon those tiny bottles of model airplane enamel paints. They were for the most part ready to use right out of the bottle. Depending upon the pigment some needed just small amounts of paint thinner. Either way the choice was made to use the enamels on the basically flat low textured canvas boards. The obvious choice to be both sensible and cost effective. Taking on the task of using an airbrush was not going to be an easy choice however. There was much to learn and many hours were spent on learning to cut stencils and the like. Using an xacto knife is after all an art in itself. Stencils were an intricate part of using the airbrush effectively if one wanted to have crisp clean lines in their work. it helped to make things appear realistic. Well, enough said.
